Generic vs Detailed Arc Flash Labels: What NEC 2026 Kills

There are two kinds of arc-flash markings in the field. The generic warning sticker says, in effect, "Warning: arc flash hazard, wear PPE." The detailed label tells you the actual hazard for that equipment: nominal voltage, incident energy or PPE level, arc-flash boundary, and — new in NEC 2026 — the date the assessment behind it was completed. Why the sticker persisted — and why it is finished

The sticker survived because it was cheap and because the earlier code text left room: before NEC 2026, the detailed-label requirement reached only equipment at 1,000 A and above, so a generic warning was the path of least resistance below it. Two changes closed that room. The 1,000 A threshold was removed, bringing essentially all non-dwelling service and feeder equipment into scope. And the assessment-date requirement made the label a dated record — a sticker has nothing to date.

The deeper problem with the sticker is that it transfers the work. "Wear PPE" with no values asks the electrician to invent the risk assessment at the door, under time pressure, with no inputs. That is not a warning; it is a liability transfer. The detailed label moves the analysis to before the work order, where it belongs.

What "detailed" has to include

Pulling NEC 2026 §110.16 and NFPA 70E §130.5(H) together:

  1. Nominal system voltage — checked against the equipment in front of the worker.
  2. Arc-flash boundary — the distance line for unqualified people.
  3. Incident energy, PPE level, or both — the number the clothing decision is made from.
  4. Assessment completion date — the NEC 2026 addition; the field that makes a stale label visible.
  5. Traceability — a study or label ID; standard practice on spec'd work.
