How Long Do Arc Flash Labels Last? Durability and Reprint Triggers
Two clocks decide how long an arc flash label lasts. The physical clock: how long the printed label stays legible and attached, which depends on stock, print method, and environment. The analytical clock: how long the numbers on it remain true, which depends on system changes and the NFPA 70E five-year review cycle. The physical clock: stock, print, and environment
- Thermal-transfer print on UL 969 polyester or vinyl — the spec-grade combination — survives for years indoors: UV-resistant face stock, high-tack adhesive, resin image that shrugs off cleaning and abrasion. This is why public specs (Delaware DNREC, City of Tampa, and similar manuals) demand exactly this pairing with "no field markings."
- Direct-thermal print (ribbonless desktop printers) fades with heat and UV and is not UV-stable. Months to a couple of years indoors away from sunlight; near windows, outdoors, or in hot mechanical rooms, much less. It was never the durable choice — see the printer guide.
- Environment multiplies everything. Sunlight through a doorway, washdown chemicals, panel-oven heat, and condensation all shorten life. Outdoor equipment needs UV-rated stock as a baseline, not an upgrade.
The legibility check
During any panel work — and explicitly at each program audit — check: Can the values be read at arm's length? Is the header color intact? Are corners attached and the surface uncracked? Has anyone written over it? A label that fails any of these is replaced, not annotated. An illegible label is not a partially compliant label; under the specs that govern this work it is a missing one.
The analytical clock: when the numbers die first
A pristine label with stale numbers is the more dangerous failure. Reprint when:
- The system changes. Service upgrade, transformer swap, protective-device change, new large motors — each moves fault current or clearing time, which moves every value on the label. This is the trigger people skip, because the label still looks fine.
- The five-year review says so. NFPA 70E caps the risk-assessment review interval at five years; when the review re-runs the calculation, the label gets the new assessment date. The full cycle and its change triggers: how often an arc flash study is needed.
- The assessment date tells you to. NEC 2026 §110.16 puts the assessment completion date on the label precisely so anyone can see the analysis age without opening a filing cabinet. Read it before you trust the rest.
- The method moved. A label produced under IEEE 1584-2002 that has never been re-run under the 2018 model is describing a superseded calculation.
A cheap habit that pays
Keep the calculation record with the label ID.
