NFPA 70E PPE Category 1: 4 cal/cm² Minimum Rating
The range
Category 1 is the first level in the NFPA 70E PPE category method. It specifies a minimum arc rating of 4 cal/cm² for the category clothing system. The number is a rating requirement, not a calculated incident-energy band. A category is selected only through the applicable task and equipment tables after every stated condition is confirmed.
The garment system (NFPA 70E Table 130.7(C)(15)(c))
The category system includes more than a shirt label. A qualified person must use the current NFPA 70E table to select the complete arc-rated clothing and protective-equipment ensemble, including the required head, face, eye, hearing, hand, and footwear elements. Garments must be arc rated and used as tested systems.
What work it permits
Category 1 does not authorize a task. For the limited AC-equipment fallback implemented by this calculator, one verified Category 1 row covers certain equipment rated 240 V and below only when available fault current and clearing time stay within that row. If any condition is exceeded, the table outcome is withheld and an engineering study is required.
Worked example
A 208 V panel may receive Category 1 from an applicable table row when the task, equipment type, fault current, clearing time, and working distance all satisfy that row. A separate IEEE 1584 result of 3 cal/cm² would instead be labeled “incident-energy method — arc rating ≥ 3.0 cal/cm²,” with no category number.
Common misconceptions
- “A calculated value below 4 is Category 1.” The methods may not be mixed; calculated energy sets the minimum arc-rating basis directly.
- “Untreated cotton is close enough.” A category system requires arc-rated clothing and the complete listed ensemble.
- “Category 1 means safe to proceed.” PPE is the last line of defense, not energized-work authorization.
Method check: if the label shows cal/cm², use the incident-energy selection basis. If it shows Category 1, verify the table reference and every eligibility condition.
How to document the selection
Start the record by naming the method. For the PPE category method, identify the current NFPA 70E task and equipment table, the row that applies, and the facts that keep the equipment inside that row: equipment type, nominal voltage, available fault current, maximum clearing time, working distance, and maintenance condition. Record where the fault-current and clearing-time values came from. A category without its table basis is difficult for the next qualified person to verify after a trip-setting, transformer, or utility change.
For a calculated incident-energy result, record the energy at the stated working distance and select a tested system whose arc rating meets or exceeds that energy. Keep the incident-energy method label even when the chosen garment happens to carry a common 4, 8, 12, 25, or 40 cal/cm² rating. Garment inventory is not a reason to rename the calculation as a category.
In both methods, finish the task-specific assessment. Confirm shock protection separately; review equipment condition, likelihood of an arc event, boundaries, job briefing, barricades, tools, and the hierarchy of risk controls. Verify that layered garments have a tested system rating rather than adding individual ratings. Document the assessment date and the conditions that require reassessment. PPE selection is the last protective layer after elimination and engineering controls have been considered, not proof that energized work is justified.

What is PPE Category 1?
Category 1 is an outcome of the NFPA 70E PPE category method and requires an arc-rated clothing system with a minimum arc rating of 4 cal/cm². It is not assigned by converting a calculated incident-energy value.
Does a 3 cal/cm² calculation equal Category 1?
No. A calculated result uses the incident-energy method: select arc-rated clothing whose rating meets or exceeds 3 cal/cm² and complete the task-specific PPE assessment. Do not print Category 1 from that conversion.
Does Category 1 make energized work permissible?
No. The category identifies PPE after the table method is found applicable. Energized-work justification, shock protection, job planning, and the hierarchy of risk controls remain separate requirements.
