NFPA 70E PPE Category 4: 40 cal/cm² Minimum Rating

Category 4 specifies a minimum arc rating of 40 cal/cm² and is the highest category in the NFPA 70E category method. It is only valid when an applicable task/equipment table assigns it and every associated condition is satisfied.

The current NFPA 70E category table defines the complete Category 4 system. Use only compatible, tested arc-rated assemblies and account for head, face, eye, hearing, hand, body, footwear, and shock protection. Heat stress, visibility, mobility, and rescue planning are material parts of the job plan.

What work it permits

Category 4 is not a permission level. De-energization and engineering controls remain higher-order controls. Where energized work is justified, the equipment condition, likelihood, task, boundaries, protective system, and emergency planning must all be addressed.

Worked example

A verified table row for certain switchgear may assign Category 4 when its equipment, fault-current, clearing-time, and working-distance conditions are met. An IEEE 1584 calculation of 30 cal/cm² is not Category 4; its label instead requires arc rating ≥ 30.0 cal/cm².

Common misconceptions

  • “25–40 cal/cm² is Category 4.” That is a calculated-energy conversion and mixes methods.
  • “Category 4 means the task is approved.” PPE does not replace the energized-work decision.
  • “40 cal/cm² is a universal legal cutoff.” It is the Category 4 minimum rating, not a universal prohibition threshold for the incident-energy method.

High-severity note: even where a table row is applicable, reducing exposure through remote operation, faster clearing, or other engineering controls deserves serious evaluation before relying on PPE.

How to document the selection

Start the record by naming the method. For the PPE category method, identify the current NFPA 70E task and equipment table, the row that applies, and the facts that keep the equipment inside that row: equipment type, nominal voltage, available fault current, maximum clearing time, working distance, and maintenance condition. Record where the fault-current and clearing-time values came from. A category without its table basis is difficult for the next qualified person to verify after a trip-setting, transformer, or utility change.

For a calculated incident-energy result, record the energy at the stated working distance and select a tested system whose arc rating meets or exceeds that energy. Keep the incident-energy method label even when the chosen garment happens to carry a common 4, 8, 12, 25, or 40 cal/cm² rating. Garment inventory is not a reason to rename the calculation as a category.

In both methods, finish the task-specific assessment. Confirm shock protection separately; review equipment condition, likelihood of an arc event, boundaries, job briefing, barricades, tools, and the hierarchy of risk controls. Verify that layered garments have a tested system rating rather than adding individual ratings. Document the assessment date and the conditions that require reassessment. PPE selection is the last protective layer after elimination and engineering controls have been considered, not proof that energized work is justified.
