NFPA 70E PPE Category 2: 8 cal/cm² Minimum Rating
The range
Category 2 specifies a minimum arc rating of 8 cal/cm² within the NFPA 70E category method. It is assigned only when the selected task/equipment table applies and all notes, current limits, clearing-time limits, and working-distance conditions are satisfied.
The garment system (NFPA 70E Table 130.7(C)(15)(c))
Use the current NFPA 70E category table to assemble the full system. Arc-rated body clothing, head and face protection, eye and hearing protection, hand protection, and footwear must be evaluated together. A single 8 cal/cm² garment does not establish a complete Category 2 ensemble.
What work it permits
The category is not permission to work energized. The risk assessment must still establish likelihood and severity, justified energized work, boundaries, shock protection, and safe work practices. This calculator emits Category 2 only from its verified table rows; outside those limits it does not guess.
Worked example
A verified 600 V-class equipment row may return Category 2 when its specified equipment type, available fault current, clearing time, and distance conditions are all met. A calculated 6.2 cal/cm² result is different: it prints a minimum arc rating of 6.2 cal/cm² and no category.
Common misconceptions
- “4–8 cal/cm² always means Category 2.” That is an impermissible calculated-energy conversion.
- “Daily-wear rating is enough.” The task may require additional head, face, hand, hearing, or shock protection.
- “A table row still applies after settings change.” Recheck clearing time and fault current whenever the system changes.
Traceability check: a valid Category 2 label should identify the table method and link back to the equipment assumptions used to establish eligibility.
How to document the selection
Start the record by naming the method. For the PPE category method, identify the current NFPA 70E task and equipment table, the row that applies, and the facts that keep the equipment inside that row: equipment type, nominal voltage, available fault current, maximum clearing time, working distance, and maintenance condition. Record where the fault-current and clearing-time values came from. A category without its table basis is difficult for the next qualified person to verify after a trip-setting, transformer, or utility change.
For a calculated incident-energy result, record the energy at the stated working distance and select a tested system whose arc rating meets or exceeds that energy. Keep the incident-energy method label even when the chosen garment happens to carry a common 4, 8, 12, 25, or 40 cal/cm² rating. Garment inventory is not a reason to rename the calculation as a category.
In both methods, finish the task-specific assessment. Confirm shock protection separately; review equipment condition, likelihood of an arc event, boundaries, job briefing, barricades, tools, and the hierarchy of risk controls. Verify that layered garments have a tested system rating rather than adding individual ratings. Document the assessment date and the conditions that require reassessment. PPE selection is the last protective layer after elimination and engineering controls have been considered, not proof that energized work is justified.

Is a 6.2 cal/cm² result Category 2?
No. For a 6.2 cal/cm² incident-energy result, select a system rated at least 6.2 cal/cm² and complete the PPE assessment. An available 8 cal/cm² system may satisfy the rating, but the calculation is not renamed Category 2.
Is an 8 cal/cm² shirt the whole Category 2 system?
No. Category 2 refers to a complete arc-rated clothing and protective-equipment system selected from the current table, not one garment in isolation.
